Vietnam asks social media platforms to remove ‘false information’ within 24 hours

Vietnam’s information minister on Friday announced tightening rules on handling false content on social media platforms, requiring social media to remove false content within 24 hours, instead of the previous 48 hours. The new rules make Vietnam one of the countries with the strictest controls on social media. Information and Communications Minister Nguyen Manh Hung told parliament there was a risk of “fake news, which if handled slowly will spread widely”. Hung said that the current government’s punishment for publishing and spreading false information is not enough to deter the public, and suggested that the punishment should be increased. Vietnam has enacted a cybersecurity law and national social media conduct guidelines over the past few years.
