WHO warns monkeypox poses real risk to Europe

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that monkeypox poses a real risk to European public health. The WHO’s director of European affairs said the longer the virus spreads, the wider its impact. The WHO called on European authorities and civil society to take urgent action to curb the further rise in the number of cases. Europe is now the epicentre of monkeypox outbreaks, with more than 1,500 cases detected in 25 European countries, accounting for 85% of global cases. Monkeypox, a virus endemic in West Africa, has now spread to 39 countries around the world. Infection mainly comes from close physical contact, mostly affecting gay men, and it can also be spread through respiratory droplets through prolonged face-to-face contact.
