Why Google and Facebook are dead

Google was the first to come up with word2vec, the first to come up with transformer and BERT, the first to come up with LaMDA, which was found to be sentient by employees, and hurriedly launched a semi-finished Bard after being ridiculed by ChatGPT

Why all this? I think it is likely to be Google’s vision :

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

The information in the world can be said to have been successfully “organized” by Google. It’s just a pity that it doesn’t want to “understand” and “digest and absorb” all of it, and turn information into “general knowledge”. ChatGPT is trying to do just that.

What is Microsoft’s vision ?

  • “Be what’s next.” (2010-2012)
  • “Empowering us all”

So it quickly acquired Skype to launch Teams, acquired Github and then invested in OpenAI, combined with Codex (code-davinci-002) to launch Github Copilot, and then logically came up with Office series Copilot. Tool full.

Then talk about why Facebook wants All in metaverse. This is clearly stated in a leaked memo on 2015-06-22

Our vision is that VR / AR will be the next major computing platform after mobile in about 10 years. It can be even more ubiquitous than mobile – especially once we reach AR – since you can always have it on. It’s more natural than mobile since it uses our normal human visual and gestural systems. It can even be more economical, because once you have a good VR / AR system, you no longer need to buy phones or TV’s or many other physical objects – they can just become apps in a digital store. … We are vulnerable on mobile to Google and Apple because they make major mobile platforms. We would like a stronger strategic position… We can achieve this only by building both a major platform as well as key apps.

Our vision is that in about a decade, VR/AR will be the next major computing platform after mobile devices. It could even be more ubiquitous than mobile devices – especially once we get to AR – because you can use it anytime, anywhere. It’s more natural than mobile because it uses our normal human vision and gesture systems. It can even be more economical because once you have a good VR/AR system, you no longer need to buy a phone, TV, or many other physical items – they just become apps in a digital store. We are very vulnerable to Google and Apple on mobile because they make the major mobile platforms. We want to have a stronger strategic position… We can only achieve this by building a major platform and key applications.

The problem is, VR/AR isn’t the next generation of phones.
