Why Smokers Want Coffee in the Morning

Some smokers are used to drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. Researchers at the University of Florida have found that compounds in roasted coffee beans may help reduce morning nicotine cravings. The researchers found that two compounds in coffee directly affect highly sensitive nicotine receptors in the brain. A smoker’s nicotine receptors become oversensitive after an overnight withdrawal. The findings , published in the journal Neuropharmacology, were performed on laboratory cells and have not been tested in humans.
