WordPress.org strongly urges theme authors to switch to locally hosted Webfonts

A German user who created a small website using the Twenty Seventeen theme said he was threatened by website visitors citing a German court ruling. If the website owner does not comply and continues to provide Google with an IP address through the use of Google Fonts, the ruling could impose a fine of €250,000.00 per infringement, or six months in prison. The case fined website owners for violating GDPR by using Google-hosted webfonts. Most theme authors have been queuing Google Fonts from the Google CDN for better performance, but this approach exposes the visitor’s IP
