In 2021, WordPress’ Meta team built a code scanner to detect potential security risks, such as unescaped SQL queries in plugin code, with the aim of reducing the load on plugin teams through automation. This particular tool was not developed to encourage best practices, but to ensure that plugins going into the directory meet the minimum standards required for security.
