The Covid-19 vaccine has prevented 19.8 million deaths worldwide in the year since its initial rollout, according to a study published in the Lancet medical journal. This mathematical modeling study analyzed deaths directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19 vaccination using death records and excess deaths. Study finds vaccines averted more than three-quarters of deaths: Vaccines are highly effective against severe disease, with 15.5 million of 19.8 million due to direct protection from vaccination; the remaining 4.3 million deaths averted by reducing virus transmission and reducing sanitation Indirect protection from system burden.
