China’s largest chip maker, SMIC, has begun mass production of 7-nanometer chips, which SMIC calls its 7-nanometer process N+2. The company did not officially announce the news, but reverse engineering firm TechInsights came to this conclusion by analyzing SMIC’s foundry chips. This means that SMIC is approaching TSMC and Samsung in process technology, and is expected to become the world’s third largest chip foundry. SMIC’s 7-nanometer process is similar to TSMC and Intel, and does not use EUV lithography. Its early customer is the cryptocurrency mining machine manufacturer MinerVa, and mass production begins in July 2021.
