José María Tranquilino Francisco de Jesús Velasco Gómez Obregón, commonly known as José María Velasco, was a 19th-century Mexican polymath and a well-known painter who, through his paintings Mexican geography became a symbol of national identity. He was one of the most popular artists of his time and an internationally known artist. His painting “Valley of Mexico” is considered his masterpiece; he created seven different versions, one of which we will show today. Of all the 19th-century painters, Velasco was “the first to be considered a model of nationalism in the post-revolutionary period”.
Side note: Check out another José Maria Velasco masterpiece that perfectly combines the beauty of the Mexican landscape with the country’s burgeoning industrialization.
