José María Tranquilino Francisco de Jesús Velasco Gómez Obregón, commonly known as José María Velasco, was a 19th-century Mexican polymath and a well-known painter who, through his paintings Mexican geography became a symbol of national identity. He was one of the most popular artists of his time and an internationally known artist. His painting “Valley of Mexico” is considered his masterpiece; he created seven different versions, one of which we will show today. Of all the 19th-century painters, Velasco was “the first to be considered a model of nationalism in the post-revolutionary period”.

Side note: Check out another José Maria Velasco masterpiece that perfectly combines the beauty of the Mexican landscape with the country’s burgeoning industrialization.

P.S. The beautiful scenery always takes my breath away. If you feel the same way, maybe it will help to write down your thoughts on a masterpiece. If you’re in the mood, take a look at our art store’s art diary .
