American schoolchildren’s numeracy skills plummet

According to the latest test results from the National Education Progress Evaluation System, the new crown epidemic has caused the math and reading skills of nine-year-olds to fall to the levels of 20 years ago, and the decline of black students is relatively more severe. It was the first time that math scores for this age group had fallen since the system began tracking student achievement in the 1970s, and the biggest drop in reading in 30 years. In math, black students lost 13 points to white students’ 5 points, widening the gap between the two groups. Low-income students, as well as black and Hispanic students, are being affected more profoundly by school closures, in part because schools are more likely to be remote for longer periods of time.
