Apple will allow subscription-based members to automatically renew after price increases

Apple has been testing a new feature earlier this year that would let developers charge higher prices for auto-renewing subscriptions. Previously this “pilot program” was limited to select developers, and now Apple is rolling out the feature to all developers, albeit with some limitations.

Previously, when Apple developers wanted to increase the price of automatic renewals, they needed the confirmation and consent of the user to continue the subscription, otherwise the subscription would be cancelled. Apple believes this will cause users to miss reminders and accidentally lose their subscription-based memberships.

Therefore, Apple plans to introduce a new feature to developers that allows developers to increase the renewal price of subscription-based members without the user’s confirmed consent.

However, in order to prevent developers from abusing this function, Apple has also made certain restrictions on this function. After the new rules are launched, developers can only increase the price once a year, and the maximum increase for ordinary subscriptions is $5, and the maximum increase for annual subscriptions is $50. Subject to the above conditions, price increases also require users to be notified of price changes via email, push notifications, and in-app messages, and users need to be able to easily unsubscribe.

If the price increase of the automatic renewal exceeds the above limit, then the user still needs to confirm manually, otherwise the subscription will be automatically canceled as at present.
