In the 1940s, the Mexican artist Maria Izquierdo used the perspective method used in Baroque still lifes to create an innovative and humorous set of images of shallow cabinets (or pantries). In their use of illusory space and complex color combinations, Izquierdo paints a collection of objects including blown and pressed glass bottles, a small wooden cross, a bowl of fruit, and three folk animal artworks. Izquierdo’s The Cabinet ( Alacena ) reveals the dual culture of Europe and America. An optical trap ( trompe l’oeil ) is created through elements like the fruit bowl , which reclines on a shelf and enters the viewer’s view. Izquierdo decorated her home with a similar “cabinet”, and many of the objects in the painting can be seen in photos from the artist’s studio and are still carefully preserved by the artist’s family today. For example, the brown and white bull in the upper right corner of the painting is from Peru, which Izquierdo may have bought during a trip to South America in 1944. Izquierdo’s embrace of folk art forms has a strong nationalist dimension, but the artist is also associated with them on a purely aesthetic level. When she depicts these objects in another painting, Izquierdo shows more of her multisensory responses to the textures, colors, and sounds of these objects, reflecting that “the emotions evoked by these objects spark the painting and its title. “. The result was at times lighthearted, as in this work’s humorous encounter of a hen and a rooster, but it was also a poetic take on a form of folk art that was not treated equally by other artists of the time.
