The English-language version of China’s state media Global Times yesterday tweeted about the Chinese reaction to the assassination of Shinzo Abe. Among them are sentences like this:
Chinese people are not sophisticated in general, and they dare to express explicitly their love and hate.
The linked article was still online as of 4 p.m. Beijing time on Monday, and the author is Wang Wen, executive dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China. The tweet itself has been deleted, but Tom Grundy keeps it .
This is the result of the Chinese English-Chinese dictionary explaining “sophisticated” as “sophisticated” and “sophisticated” for many years. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, sophisticated when used to describe a person means “international experience, knowledge of fashion and culture” or “ability to explain complex issues”. Presumably what Dean Wang wanted to express was that “Chinese people are generally simple, clear love-hate, and outspoken”, but writing it in this way becomes “Chinese people are generally short-sighted and ignorant of world affairs.” Dean Wang has quite a lot of international experience, but it does seem to be not too sophisticated. Does this have nothing to do with the term being misunderstood in China?
