Japan experiences strongest heatwave on record

Japan experienced its strongest heatwave on record . Temperatures in Tokyo topped 35 degrees for the eighth day in a row on Saturday, the second time since records began in 1875. In Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, the temperature hit 40 degrees Celsius on Friday. There has been a surge in the number of people being treated for heat stroke, with more than 4,500 people taken to hospital by ambulance in recent days with symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion, more than four times the number in the same period last year, with most patients over the age of 65. The elderly are vulnerable to extreme temperatures, and they make up a large portion of Japan’s aging population. While there have been no blackouts yet, power companies have warned that the heatwave has strained the grid and advised customers to conserve electricity.
