Following Kodak’s previous investment in San Diego, Calif.-based battery startup Wildcat Discovery Technologies (WDT), Kodak engineers discovered that WDT’s “super cells” had significantly higher similarity. So Kodak engineers say these film machines need only a little modification to produce the materials needed for the battery.
According to Kodak CEO Jim Continenza, they had planned to sell these $70 million film making machines in order to keep the company running, but the price at the time of sale had dropped to $2 million. Fortunately, now they have found these two similar technology, so these film-making facilities have been given a new lease of life.
Now, Kodak’s business has added a new field of electric vehicle battery manufacturing, except for electric vehicle batteries, household batteries also use similar coatings and related chemical products, which means that Kodak can use the same technology for the market. Almost all electronics manufacture rechargeable batteries.
Kodak has also entered into an agreement with WDT, where Kodak will provide WDT with a thin-film coating technology critical to the safety and reliability of WDT’s next-generation electric vehicle batteries.
