Long-term soft drink intake leads to memory impairment, mouse study finds

Excessive consumption of soft drinks may impair memory, according to a study published in the journal Experimental Gerontology. In the experiment, the researchers gave 2, 8, and 14-month-old Wistar rats a cola soft drink or water (control group) for 67 days, participated in a maze to measure their spatial memory, and then killed the rats on day 68 and dissected them. Its brain, analyzed for antioxidant enzymes (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The results showed that long-term consumption of soft drinks can lead to memory impairment and oxidative stress.
