Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that if he succeeds in acquiring Twitter, he will revoke Twitter’s ban on former U.S. President Donald Trump. Musk said Twitter’s ban on Trump’s account was “extremely stupid” and the social media should not have a permanent ban. “Permanent bans should be extremely rare and really used on bot accounts, scam accounts, spam accounts… I do think banning Trump is incorrect,” Musk said.
“I would reverse the permanent ban, which fundamentally undermines trust in Twitter,” Musk added. “I don’t fully own Twitter yet. So it’s not a sure thing.”
Earlier reports said that multiple Biden advisers revealed that Biden administration officials are closely watching Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, and they are worried about whether Musk will allow Trump to return to the platform after the acquisition.
Trump responded by saying that he would not return to Twitter, but use his own social platform “Truth Social”. Trump said: “No, I won’t use Twitter anymore. I want Musk to buy Twitter because he will improve Twitter, but I will use my voice platform ‘Truth Social'”.
Late last month, Twitter confirmed that its board had accepted Musk’s proposal to go private. Under the terms of the agreement, Musk will acquire Twitter for $54.20 per share, or about $44 billion in total. After the deal, Twitter will become a privately held company. The deal is still subject to approval by Twitter shareholders and regulators.
Musk also said that the best-case scenario is that the Twitter acquisition can be completed within 2 to 3 months.
