According to Businesskorea, Samsung Electronics is developing a 200-megapixel mobile phone camera, and the camera is expected to be installed on the next-generation Samsung Galaxy S23 series mobile phones first.

According to reports, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics (both are subsidiaries of Samsung Group, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is the largest supplier of mobile phone cameras to Samsung Electronics) are in the final stage of development of the camera.

Samsung Electronics is developing its own phone cameras independently of Samsung Electro-Mechanics as part of the dualization of Samsung’s component production, and is also producing its own cameras. In the production of mobile phone cameras, Samsung Electronics accounts for 30%, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics accounts for 70%. It is reported that Samsung Electronics has shared a rough roadmap for the development of 200-megapixel cameras with major camera module partners.

Samsung will release the world’s first 200-megapixel mobile image sensor ISOCELL HP1 in 2021. An image sensor is a semiconductor chip that converts the light signal entering the camera lens into a digital signal.

Samsung Electronics is expected to install a 200-megapixel main camera in the Galaxy S23 Ultra to be released next year, Businesskorea said, but it is unclear whether Samsung has made a final decision.

The current highest-pixel camera on a Samsung phone is the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 108-megapixel camera, and Samsung’s previously released Galaxy S2 and S21 series also have 108-megapixel cameras.

If Samsung releases the Galaxy S23 Ultra next year with a 200-megapixel camera, it will be the first change to Samsung’s smartphone camera specs in four years. As the number of camera pixels increases, smartphone manufacturers must improve the performance of related components such as storage, various sensors, lenses and processors. Some experts predict that Samsung Electronics’ rivalry with Apple over smartphone cameras will heat up next. Apple plans to release the iPhone 14 in the second half of 2022, and its camera pixels will be increased to 48 million. This is the first change in Apple’s camera pixels in seven years. Say goodbye to the “ancestral” 12 million pixels.
