A British patient has been infected with the new crown for up to 505 days, scientists report . Infectious disease expert Luke Blagdon Snell said 505 days was the longest reported infection so far. His team investigated what mutations appear in people with superlong infections, and whether variants evolve. The study involved nine patients who tested positive for the new coronavirus and had a persistent infection of at least eight weeks. All of these people have had their immune systems weakened by organ transplants, treatments for HIV, cancer or other diseases. The identities of these individuals have not been released for privacy reasons. Repeated testing showed their infection lasted an average of 73 days. Two of them have been infected for more than a year. The longest known case previously confirmed by PCR testing lasted 335 days, the researchers said.
