As part of the 22H1 update, Microsoft added a number of new features to Windows 11 earlier this year, such as selecting text directly in the Teams app. However, the multi-tab function of the file explorer is still in the test experience stage that has not been officially released. The latest news is that after the next major version update (22H2), Microsoft will officially provide the file explorer with tabs that have been waiting for many years, as well as a new main view experience.

Windows Latest states:

Compared with the multi-tab feature of File Explorer (Explorer), the newly introduced Home view (Home) will allow users to more easily view recently used files (including documents and pictures on the OneDrive network disk).

The good news is that this may be changing.

On the one hand, although third-party tools such as ViveTool have been able to implement this function, Microsoft has been slow to provide the public with an experience channel in this regard.

On the other hand, there are reports that the Windows 11 22H2 update will arrive in the last week of September, with a wider rollout in October-November.

It is said that Microsoft has now started pushing this option to Windows Insider testers in order to prepare for the arrival of the Windows 11 22H2 fall update.

The bad news is that for any Windows 11 OS users in the production pipeline, this feature may not be included in the first release of 22H2.

In fact, the RTM version of Windows 11 22H2 still lacks the multi-tab feature support of File Explorer.

It’s more likely that Microsoft may be planning to roll out this improvement to Windows 11 users in stages (or until October-November) through subsequent ‘cumulative updates’.

Meanwhile, beta testers on the Dev channel have now received several fixes related to File Explorer (such as the sudden duplication of several folders), as well as a taskbar bug in the latest preview build.

In addition, users can now drag the left half of the title bar of File Explorer with the mouse or touch. And fixed a bug that when selecting folders and using the context menu, they may not be opened smoothly.
