Musk warns Twitter employees: I have ‘extremely high’ engagement requirements

Employees at the social media platform should expect clear direction from the new owner if Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter is reportedly successful, but it may not be easy.

Musk has reached a deal with Twitter’s board of directors for $54.20 per share, for a total value of $44 billion. After the acquisition, Twitter will become a private company from a public company.

Recent reports suggest that resumes received for Twitter openings have increased by more than 250% since Musk struck a deal to take Twitter private. There are also reports that Musk will temporarily serve as the company’s CEO once the take-private deal for Twitter is completed.

In the face of these reports, Musk also shared his own insights and expectations. Once the acquisition closes, the social media company will be highly focused on “hardcore software engineering, design, information security and server hardware,” he said.

That’s not all. Musk also added in a follow-up post that Twitter employees should be aware that the company’s expectations for engagement are “extremely high,” but still well below what he expects of himself. This suggests that Twitter employees will have a hard time under Musk, as the CEO has set himself extremely high, if not healthy, engagement expectations.

Musk has shown this in previous layers when Model X and Model X production ramps were blocked. Both vehicles have experienced significant delivery delays, putting Tesla under pressure. Musk then decided to sleep directly on the floor of the Fremont factory so he could fix the problem at any time. It may seem like a lot of work, but that’s Musk’s nature.

His high expectations for Twitter have the potential to attract a lot of good talent. This is already evident in two of Musk’s main companies. Tesla and SpaceX, both known for their high demands on employees, have also been the most sought-after companies for job seekers. For example, Tesla’s recently disclosed 2021 Impact Report showed that the company received 3 million job applications last year alone.

But it remains to be seen how Musk’s recent comments on Twitter will reverberate among the social media company’s existing employees. Some Twitter employees reportedly expressed reservations and frustration with Musk’s leadership. But as Musk’s acquisition plans progress, management changes seem inevitable.
