Russia tightens control over internet

Russia has introduced a number of policies and regulations over the past few months to tighten control over the Internet . Lawmakers demanded that their home country’s app store be pre-installed on mobile phones, restrict data transfer abroad, tighten foreign agent laws to crack down on VPN use, announced the establishment of a mobile phone IMEI code database, and plan to stop using foreign software for critical infrastructure by 2025. Stanislav Shakirov, founder of Privacy Accelerator, pointed out that since 2012, Russia has legislated to regulate and control the Internet in five areas: control of Internet infrastructure on the territory, pressure on domestic Internet companies to increase censorship, restrictions on independent media, censorship of online speech and restrictions on protests activity, restricting access to information by blocking websites.
